Sales volumes of TAC films decreased year on year due to a change in share distribution among core customers and adjustments in the market, although these factors were within the scope of expectations made at the start of the period.
In optical products, results were along target lines although interchangeable lenses for DSLR cameras decreased year on year. Sales of color meters were solid due in part to the effect of M&As in the latter half of the previous fiscal year. Sales volumes of lens units for mobile phones progressed steadily although it has become difficult to generate profit in this sector. In optical pickup lenses, sales for DVD application decreased but increased for Blu-ray application. As a result of structural improvements made in this business in the latter half of the previous fiscal year, we have switched to a system that can consistently generate profit. Tough conditions continued for glass substrates for HDDs as in the first quarter.
With regard to the future direction of the optical business, today we announced withdrawal of the glass substrates for HDDs business and a structural review of the lens units for mobile phones business as a means to lower the ratio of businesses that do not offer high profit potential despite the prospect of reasonable sales volumes. On the other hand, we would like to increase businesses that have the potential to generate high profit even though scale is small within industrial and professional applications, as with the sensing field.
